Cream : Tales of Brave Ulysses by Eric Clapton And Martin Sharp

You thought the leaden winter would bring you down forever,
But you rode upon a steamer to the violence of the sun.
And the colors of the sea blind your eyes with trembling mermaids,
And you touch the distant beaches with tales of brave Ulysses:
How his naked ears were tortured by the sirens sweetly singing,
For the sparkling waves are calling you to kiss their white laced lips.
And you see a girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise,
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea.
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body,
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind.
The tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.
Her name is Aphrodite and she rides a crimson shell,
And you know you cannot leave her for you touched the distant sands
With tales of brave Ulysses; how his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing.
The tiny purple fishes run lauging through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.

Cream : Anyone for Tennis by Eric Clapton And Martin Sharp

Twice upon a time in the valley of the tears
An auctioneer is bidding for a box of fading years
And the elephants are dancing on the graves of squealing mice.
Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?
And the ice creams are all melting on the streets of bloody beer
While the beggars stain the pavements with flourescent Christmas cheer
And the Bentley-driving guru is putting up his price.
Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?
And the prophets in the boutiques give out messages of hope
With jingle bells and fairy tales and blind colliding scopes
And you can tell they're all the same underneath the pretty lies.
Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?
The yellow Buddhist monk is burning brightly at the zoo
You can bring a bowl of rice and then a glass of water too
And fate is setting up the chessboard while death rolls out the dice.
Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?

-From B side single of "SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE " in 1968.

One of the great artifacts from the ‘60s, an Aladdin’s lamp with a genie as accommodating as any to issue from the work of Jimi Hendrix or The Doors. As the cover suggests, this was transportative stuff at the time (and still is): Cream serving as the stylish sportscar alongside Hendrix’ hog or The Doors’ diesel truck in the highways of the mind. Part of the album’s appeal (to me anyway) is its inscrutable nature: “SWLABR” has always defied comprehension, “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Tales of Brave Ulysses” likewise are monuments to lost heroes. Cream steps back from the canvas when Jack Bruce steps back from the microphone; “Outside Woman Blues” (featuring Eric Clapton on vocals) and “Blue Condition” (Ginger Baker this time) aren’t artistic expression so much as plain musical expression (ok, so is “Take It Back”). Unfortunately, I don’t own Fresh Cream (yet), so a breakdown of leaps and bounds will have to wait for another day. The songs I have heard from their first album (“Spoonful,” “I’m So Glad,” “Sleepy Time Time”) seem light years removed from the masterful music of “Strange Brew” and “Sunshine of Your Love.” Even the closing “Mother’s Lament,” a playful bit of silliness if ever there was, underscores just how confident Cream was in the studio this time. They are clearly at the top of their game on Disraeli Gears, combining stellar musicianship with high-minded aspirations that literally sought to take popular music to a new level. If you wanted to make the case for Cream as a progressive rock outfit, I’d start with Disraeli Gears. Its influence pervades prog’s formative years and traces of it can be found in the work of King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and even The Beatles.

Sunshine of Your Love
Produced by Felix Pappalardi
Released on January 1968
US CHART POSITION #5 (charted January 13, 1968 for 26 weeks)

Mercy, that’s an ugly, sallow yellow on the early Atco singles. Fortunately, the music contains all the color one could want: a rainbow of psychedelic blues exploding in the ears (but the rainbow has a beard). “Sunshine of Your Love” appears here in an edited form; it sounds like they just cut the guitar solo out from the middle. “SWABLR” remains intact, inscrutable and beautiful. Although you could argue it was a back-to-back hit to begin with, Old Gold reissued the single in the ‘80s with “Anyone For Tennis” as its doubles partner, proving that some things are just impossible to improve upon. If you're interested in these sort of things, the original Atco single does list the artist as "The Cream." The nerve.
